About the school

Nelson is one of the largest Primary schools in the country. We have 4 classes for each year group as well as two part time nursery classes and a total roll of approximately 892. The school has Resourced Provision for 14 pupils with Specific Language Disorder who are completely integrated into the life of the school. These children have the same access to the curriculum and opportunities as every pupil in the school. Our pupils have culturally and socially diverse backgrounds. 71% of our children have English as a second or even third language. Approximately 40 languages are spoken in our school with the main languages being Tamil, Bengali and Urdu.

The three storey main building dates from 1901 and there have been additions of a foundation stage wing and a community room. Our dining room, which was completed in November 2011 is used for the benefit of the community as well as its main dining function providing all our children with a free school lunch.

Our Vision

At Nelson Primary School we are committed to the academic, personal, social and emotional development for all of our pupils. Our environment is engaging and stimulating where inspiring teaching and enthusiastic learning is paramount.

In pursuit of excellence, we will always endeavour to demonstrate best practice to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical developments of pupils in our school. All pupils are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for a future in the global community.

Our pupils will experience a broad and balanced curriculum, which challenges and extends their self-discipline, motivation and self-esteem in order to achieve excellence in learning. In partnership with parents, governors and the local community, pupils from Nelson will become global citizens ready to question, take risks and fulfil their ambitions.

Proposed Multi-Academy Trust Consultation

The Governing Body is consulting on a proposal to convert to academy status and form a Multi-Academy Trust with Elmhurst Primary, Vicarage Primary and Gallions Primary. The consultation period runs from Monday September 18th to Friday October 18th with consultation meetings being held for parents and carers, staff and stakeholders.  All consultation materials are published here. After the consultation meetings the school will circulate a questionnaire so that governors can consider feedback to the proposal.
